Walden and "Civil Disobedience" by Henry David Thoreau (Signet Classics)

This is a Signet Classic edition of the famous Walden or, Life in the Woods, by Henry David Thoreau.

This edition also includes the essay, “On the Duty of Civil Disobedience,” which is more commonly referred to as simply “Civil Disobedience, as well as a small collection of poetry. Here is the complete list of poems found in this edition:

  • “Sic Vita”
  • “Winter Memories”
  • “To the Maiden in the East”
  • “Smoke”
  • “Mist”
  • “Inspiration”

Signet Classics was an imprint of The New American Library, which was the once the largest publisher of paperback books in the United States. There were more than 1,000 books in the Signet Classics series, and unfortunately, most of these titles did not credit the cover artist. That means we’re not sure who did the art for this cover. We really do appreciate the minimalist look, though. It’s a fitting aesthetic for Walden.

This version of Walden, which was published in 1960, was Signet Classics #946. The number appears on the spine of the book.
