The morbid-yet-beautiful cover art is by artist Joseph Lombardero.
Lombardero began his career as a pharmaceutical artist and later transitioned into producing record jackets for jazz and classical albums.
Lombardero provided the cover for Sax Rohmer’s The Quest of the Sacred Slipper in 1966, which made him a sought-after cover artist. He worked with many publishers over the course of his career, including Trident, Dell, Ace Books, and Pyramid Books.

Lombardero painted covers for books of many types, including titles in the science fiction, western, mystery, and romance genres. He received the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Mystery Book Cover in 1967.
