First and Final Rites by Shariann Lewitt

The cover for First and Final Rites by Shariann Lewitt is nothing short of amazing. You have some sort of futuristic goat (is he wearing sunglasses?) coming out of a mirror into what seems to be — I don’t know, Ancient Persia? The scene in the mirror almost looks like a screenshot from MTV from the 1980s.

The book seems to have done quite alright, scoring blurbs of admiration from authors such as Madeleine L’Engle (who very famously wrote A Wrinkle in Time) and Andre Norton. Those are impressive recommendations to have on any writer’s resume.

The cover artist, Barclay Shaw, has created more than 500 book and magazine covers. A former advertising artist, Shaw delved into the world of fantasy and science fiction when his friend Harlan Ellison asked him to create covers for the paperback editions of some of his novels.

Since then, Shaw has provided cover art for books by Philip K. Dick, Isaac Asimov, C. J. Cherryh and a number of other authors. He is a five-time Hugo nominee and a 3D animation consultant for the U.S. government. In 1995, Paper Tiger Books published Electric Dreams: The Art of Barclay Shaw, a collection of Shaw’s artwork. Harlan Ellison wrote the book’s introduction.
