Evenor by George McDonald

Evenor is a collection of fantasy novelettes that were originally published by Scottish author George MacDonald in the 1860s and 1870s. The stories in this collection are “The Wise Woman” (originally published in 1875). “The Carasoyn” (originally published in 1871), and The Golden Key” (originally published in 1867).

This collection was published by Ballatine books in the 1970s. It is the fifty-third volume of the Ballantine Adult Fantasy series and the third collection of MacDonald stories published by Ballatine.

The cover was created by Spanish artist Gervasio Gallardo. Gallardo was recruited by Ballatine books in 1969, and he quickly became their most prolific cover artist. He also created the covers for Peter S. Beagle’s The Last Unicorn and H.P. Lovecraft’s The Spawn of Cthulu.

Gallardo has also had success exhibiting his original paintings. Many of his works are collected in the book The Fantastic World of Gervasio Gallardo.
