All Judgment Fled by James White

All Judgment Fled by James White

All Judgment Fled is a science fiction novel by James White. The cover we’re showing here is from the original mass market paperback edition of the book, published in September, 1970. The story originally appeared as a serial in IF magazine.

White was a prolific author of science fiction, best known for his Sector General series, which contains the novels Hospital Station and Star Surgeon — though All Judgment Fled is not part of that series. White was a staunch pacifist, so he shied away from focusing on space battles and instead tended to focus on medical drama in space, which oftentimes contained anatomical descriptions of alien species.

This sleek cover art is by Dean Ellis. Ellis didn’t begin his career in the world of science fiction book covers; he actually worked creating advertisements for magazines, and he even created art for postage stamps.

However, he was commissioned to a few covers in the late 1960s, including a 1967 reissue of Ray Bradbury’s The Illustrated Man, which was very distinctive (and amazing).

This led to a decades-long career in science fiction book covers. He even created a cover for a Star Wars book called Han Solo’s Revenge, which was published in 1979.
